Scaling Out, Up, and Deep: Mobile Making Afterschool Program across Four California State University Campuses

Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515B

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Throughout the last decade, California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) has operated a maker-based STEM afterschool program called “Mobile Making” at local schools, libraries, and community centers for children in grades 4 through 8. The weekly, 90-minute activities aim to make STEM relevant for participants and promote their STEM self-efficacy and interest. A diverse group of university students leads sessions with youth and serves as near-peer mentors. Three additional CSU campuses have recently started their own Mobile Making programs. In this structured poster session, we will share research findings, program outcomes, and lessons learned, and describe how other universities can engage in or initiate similar efforts in scalable and sustainable ways.
