Sun, April 12, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Santa Barbara C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In 2011, Judy Alston and Patrice McClellan published Herstories: Leading with the Lessons of the Lives of Black Women Activists. This groundbreaking work was one of the first to illuminate the specific ways that Black women lead. The text theorizes Black women’s leadership across various sociocultural spaces and institutions. Accordingly, it laid groundwork for important discussions about the ways race and gender impact leadership style, can broaden leadership discourses, and demonstrates Black women’s unique contributions in educational and political interventions. Symposium participants will reflect on the legacy of this work, illuminate new questions and possibilities rooted in the historical legacy of Black women’s leadership for more just educational futures, and honor a key contributor to the field of Educational Leadership.
