Learning from “failure”: Exploring challenges in unsuccessful research-practice partnerships

Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Los Cerritos

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Research-practice partnerships (RPPs) have gained momentum, defined as long-term collaborations between researchers and practitioners involving mutually beneficial joint work. However, as a novel form of research, RPPs can pose challenges. Despite scholars' warnings that many RPP efforts may fail, literature tends to focus on successful partnerships that sustained long term, while unsuccessful partnerships have rarely been studied. This symposium addresses this gap through a discussion of aspiring RPPs that failed to realize their collaborative intentions. Examining interorganizational and group dynamics that contributed to challenges, this session aims to help scholars normalize discussion of failures, understand their reasons, and anticipate pitfalls. By focusing on unsuccessful cases, the session provides crucial insights that existing literature overlooks and practical guidance for future partnership development.
