Abstract

To foster restorative and transformative future-forward early literacy practices, it is critical to create spaces that refuse popular literacy policy and discourse, which have historically been anti-Black, deficit-focused, and have mandated linear, seemingly culture-neutral teaching approaches. The proposed symposium foregrounds multilayered culturally sustaining pedagogies in early literacy across a range of in-school and community contexts. Each presenting author offers anchoring literacy education research, policies, and practices to envision culturally sustaining otherwise-futures grounded in the ingenuity, wisdom, loving, and just approaches of Black, Indigenous, Asian, & Latinx communities that benefit minoritized children.
