Centering Learners, Culture, and Care: Enacting Culturally Responsive Practices through University-Community Engagement

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 3rd Floor, Georgia II

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium brings attendees into dialogue with an interdisciplinary, multigenerational panel of researchers to explore how culturally-responsive practices are enacted across a range of community-engaged contexts. Presentations focus on community-engaged research and programs that are part of a network of California-based university-community partnerships that engage intergenerational learners from historically marginalized communities with diverse university students in experiential learning activities. The symposium complements an off-site visit and includes a culturally-responsive hands-on activity. Additional presentations introduce the Culturally-Responsive Practices Framework and explore its application across a bilingual science education program and participatory action research with immigrant learners. A World Café-style discussion fosters deeper understanding of experiential learning and university-community engagement as a vital approach to improving education and communities.
