Envisioning Futures in Times of Crisis: Lessons from School-University-Community Partnership Research & Practice

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Palos Verdes

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In an era marked by political polarization, chronic underfunding, and rising youth crises, school-university-community collaborative research and practice is more crucial than ever. This multigenerational symposium draws on lessons from a network of university-community partnerships (University-Community Links), itself created at a time of crisis as a strategy to overcome institutional racism when affirmative action was eliminated in California (1996). Together, we explore how universities, schools, and local communities, as collaborative partners, work together to research and co-create more just and equitable educational environments, particularly in times of transition and crisis. Presentations implement community-based design approaches and highlight, through diverse ethnographic contexts, the challenges and innovations of school-university-community partnership, reflecting on experiences from their collaborative research and practice.
