Harnessing Waldorf for Arts-based Trauma Pedagogy Across Borders: Opportunities & Challenges

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 306B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Building on the growing body of research on trauma-sensitive education (Avery et al, 2020), this symposium spotlights Waldorf education, the oldest progressive reform movement, employing Eisner’s framework (Eisner, 2002&1994), to interview five Waldorf-inspired organizations focused on trauma-sensitive care in five communities in crisis zones across borders. The session’s guiding questions are (1) how each engages arts-based strategies to build trauma-sensitive educational space and (2) what are the implications for how we think about school given mounting crises and trauma. Papers spotlight cases in Kosovo, Brazil and US to examine arts-based instruction, community building, story telling, professional development, and movement&music to conceptualize, research and design arts-based trauma-sensitive learning settings. The session invites spirited dialogue for further research and practice.
