In this participatory workshop we will explore musicking (Small,1987), Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1980) and Theater of the Oppressed (Boal,1974) as we sing, drum and chant, in conversation with Creative Resistance (Dominguez & Cammarota,2022),and abolition (Gilmore, 2022) to co-mpose a “Music of the Oppressed” conceptual framework that reimagines/remixes Freirean participatory pedagogies for conscientização.
Workshop participants will create playlists, compose curriculum and original artivist musical works by reading the word and the world (Freire, 1980) as they musicalize select texts and their own lived experiences to share their collaborative compositions.
Together we will sing, drum and chant new pedagogies of liberation through artistic expression, cultural representation, teaching for transgression and abolitionist creation. (Urbach, 2025)
