Engaging in Arts and Making as Acts of Transformative Identity Building

Sat, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This session brings together learning sciences research exploring how people develop identities in relation to the arts, creatively engaging with others toward transformative futures. We look across four projects that center art and making as identity work, particularly for people navigating historic oppression, to better understand the ways these creative acts can provide pathways of resistance, reimagination, and transformation. We follow the conference theme, “unforgetting histories and imagining futures,” to collaboratively frame identity building as an artistic process, rather than solely a scientific one. Each paper in this session reimagines how young people and their elders inscribe themselves into the world and see every act of identification as a potential artistic act of imagination and creation toward more transformative futures.
