Creando Senderos en Comunidad: Working Towards Lifelong Language Learning with Latine Communities

Sun, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 308A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium highlights research in Illinois exploring how multilingualism is cultivated within diverse Latine communities through parent engagement, teacher development, higher education, and community spaces. Each paper challenges Eurocentric paradigms by centering cultural intuition and conducting research with, not on, our communities. Methodologies such as testimonio, plática, and critical action research illuminate systemic gaps in teacher preparation and bilingual education program access for Latine communities. Papers explore secondary dual language instruction, Latina teacher advocacy, heritage speakers in college, parent perspectives on language programs, and queer Latine educators in community spaces. Collectively, these studies foreground lived experiences to reimagine educational research through a socially just lens.
