Session Type: Symposium
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform K–12 education, introducing powerful possibilities and significant risks for equity, governance, and system renewal. This session advances a systems-level, multidisciplinary lens on AI through four empirical and design-based studies investigating how urban districts and their stakeholders are navigating AI’s emergence. Addressing procurement, design, implementation, and early adoption, the panel grounds its analysis in district policy, learning environments, participatory design with youth, and marketplace dynamics. These studies uncover persistent inequities, rooted in systemic structures and policy logics, and identify emerging strategies for ethical, empowering, and equitable AI integration. Presenters will share actionable frameworks, practical tools, and lessons learned, providing attendees with guidance to strengthen the alignment of AI innovation with educational equity.
