Beyond Histories of Compliance in Early Childhood Education: Centering Disability and Cultivating Freedom

Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 308B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Compliance with ableist norms is deeply embedded in the histories of early childhood education. This particularly affects children and families marginalized by multiple intersecting oppressions (e.g., racism, linguicism) as they are positioned in deficit-based ways and subject to disproportionate surveillance, restrictive learning and expression opportunities, and exclusion. In this symposium, contributors of a recently published volume and participants examine histories and contemporary manifestations of ableism in the field. Together, we will collaboratively imagine more just futures that center the priorities, knowledges, and freedom of disabled children and their families. The volume co-editors open the session, followed by concurrent small group dialogues with book contributors. The session will close with discussant commentary and full group discussion about ways forward.
