Session Type: Symposium
While research has explored the connection between culture and content, much of it overlooks the diverse ways of knowing that underrepresented students bring to STEM classrooms. As a result, STEM education often positions these students as outsiders rather than rightful participants—lacking the sense of rightful presence essential for meaningful engagement (Calabrese Barton & Tan, 2019). This symposium reimagines STEM education and teacher preparation by centering equity, identity, and community knowledge, and offering a liberatory framework through the lens of CSP. Presenters will share research, practical strategies, and critical reflections that collectively reframe preparatory and professional development initiatives—moving from deficit-based models to transformative approaches that position all students as full participants in STEM teaching and learning.
