Session Type: Symposium
This session will examine three university level approaches for supporting teachers in preparation for California’s Ethnic Study State Mandate. The first paper presents the findings from a study with novice Ethnic Studies teachers who experienced classroom events that disrupted or affirmed their expected responses from students. The second presentation focuses on professional development opportunities for in-service teachers to create curriculum for classes on Ethnic Studies. The final paper findings from a collaboration between a teacher educator and first year English teacher as she incorporated an Ethnic Studies framework into her middle school curriculum. Combined, these presentations provide a multifaceted exploration of how colleges and universities are supporting teachers of various stages in implementing California’s Ethnic Studies mandate effectively.
