Session Type: Symposium
This three-part symposium examined the efficacy of the Sound Partners reading program when delivered through cross-age peer tutors. A randomized controlled trial across 69 afterschool sites found peer tutors (grades 3–5) to be as effective as adults in improving the reading outcomes of kindergarten, first, and second grade tutees. Qualitative studies revealed that tutors gained confidence and leadership skills, though they faced motivational and time management challenges. A meta-analysis of 32 studies confirmed small to moderate academic gains for both tutors and tutees across diverse settings. Overall, cross-age tutoring presents a scalable, cost-effective model that benefits all participants. Future research should address implementation barriers, enhance tutor training, and explore long-term impacts.
