Session Type: Roundtable Session
This session highlights the importance of classroom observation research in fostering high quality instruction for dual language learners (DLLs). Despite comprising a third of all young children and predominantly coming from low-income families, DLLs lack access to high quality early education. The symposium presents three papers focused on DLL-specific classroom observation tools: CASEBA, COLES-DLL, and a new tool still under development. These tools aim to identify and improve instructional practices that support DLLs’ language and literacy development in both bilingual and English-medium classrooms. The session concludes with insights from a discussant experienced in bilingual instruction, emphasizing how such tools can enhance teaching quality and equity for DLLs.
Sharpening the focus: Using domain-specific tools for coaching to improve classroom quality for DLLs - Alexandra Figueras-Daniel, National Institute for Early Education Research; Christina Stephens, National Institute for Early Education Research
Examining Language Supports for Dual Language Learners (DLLs) in Transitional Kindergarten Classrooms Using the COLES-DLL - Lisa Jean White, American Institutes for Research; Leanne Elliott, American Institutes for Research
Developing and Piloting an Observation Tool for Multilingual Learners in Preschool and Kindergarten Classrooms - Camille Whitney, Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL); Martha Irene Martinez, SEAL; Guadalupe Diaz Lara, California State University - Fullerton
