Curriculum in collaboration: Exploring multilingual family and community literacy practices as resources for curriculum development

Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This symposium brings together six US-based studies showcasing children’s multilingual development through family and community literacy practices. The studies explore the roles and practices of families and communities supporting children' s biliteracies, triliteracies, and multiliteracies. In and out of school contexts are featured, including homes, mosques, science classrooms, bilingual schools, and early childhood education. Languages featured include Arabic, Chinese, English, Romanian, Somali, Spanish, and Turkish. Panelists illustrate possibilities for how families and communities can enrich curricula and foster transformative outcomes in multilingual schooling contexts. This year’s AERA theme ‘imagining futures’ invites all our panelists to reflect and discuss together ways educational researchers can bridge the connections between in and out of school life.
