Session Type: Symposium
2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Urban Education journal—five decades of advocating for students in urban educational settings. Despite the landmark Brown v. Board of Education (1954) and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which celebrated their 70th and 60th anniversaries in 2024, respectively, the goals have yet to be fully realized. Aligning perfectly with the 2026 AERA theme, Unforgetting Histories and Imagining Futures: Constructing a New Vision for Education Research, this symposium, clearly per the title, focuses on where we have been, where we are, and where we must go. The authors present their papers with recommendations for change to transform urban educational impact and outcomes, resulting from policy, practice, and research.
