Session Type: Symposium
This symposium features three short presentations, a response by Damien Sojoyner, a panel discussion, and an interactive Q&A to explore the social world of Black and non-Black Latinx youth in Los Angeles. Moving from schools to juvenile detention centers to foster care, the presenters paint a contemporary picture of how racially minoritized youth experience and navigate the carceral social order of Los Angeles. Collectively, these presentations also describe how racially minoritized youth resist, care for each other, and imagine alternatives for themselves, their families, and communities. The different components of the symposium are informed by this year’s AERA Annual Meeting Theme, where President Winn calls on us to “engage in futuring for education and education research.”
