Empowering Promise Communities: A Multi-Method Participatory Action Research Model for Family and Community Engagement

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, San Gabriel A

Session Type: Workshop

Abstract

This workshop explores the pivotal role of community and family engagement in the success of "Promise" programs through a multi-method participatory action research (PAR) framework. Drawing on an "untold story" from the Kalamazoo Promise, we examine systemic barriers to authentic engagement that can result in an "unfulfilled promise." We will introduce a novel methodological approach that integrates Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) and Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), centering the voices of youth, families, and community members—including those with neurodivergence and from diverse cultural backgrounds. Participants will analyze anonymized case studies and develop actionable strategies. This session models a research-centered approach where families and communities are empowered as co-researchers, promoting a holistic and historically responsive vision for equitable engagement initiatives.
