Dual Language Immersion Programs in LAUSD and the Potential for Equitable Learning Opportunities

Sat, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 4th Floor, Diamond 1

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The papers in this symposium examine the potential of dual-language immersion (DLI) programs to provide equitable learning opportunities for linguistic minority students in segregated urban school environments. Using longitudinal data from the Los Angeles Unified School District to answer questions around DLI expansion, enrollment, and outcomes, these four papers expand our understanding of whether and how DLI programs can generate meaningful school integration. The papers touch on questions access and opportunity for EL-designated students, low-income, and other student subgroups. Although DLI programs are not necessarily designed (or conceptualized by districts) to serve as racial/ethnic integration mechanisms, their ability to generate more integrated classrooms, both linguistically and racially/ethnically, allows us to investigate questions of access for ELs and other minoritized students.
