Rest as an Extraordinary Literacy: Black Women Educators Reclaiming Power Through Stillness, Silence, Silliness, and Refusal

Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This symposium builds on Staples-Dixon’s theory of extraordinary literacies—social, cultural, spiritual, soulful, and somatic practices that decolonize interior life and activate embodied power. Grounded in empyreal logics, these literacies shape how Black girls and women thrive despite systemic oppression. In dialogue with Tricia Hersey’s concept of rest as resistance, this panel examines rest as an extraordinary literacy: a socio emotional, socio spiritual, and insurgent practice that transcends grind culture and white supremacist patriarchal ideology. Each panelist explores how rest functions not as retreat but as a site of divine alignment, refusal, and pedagogical innovation. Together, these papers center the liberatory potential of rest as a sacred literacy essential to Black women’s wellness, thriving, and brilliance in schools and society.
