Addressing Issues in Environmental Justice Education through Collective Power in Chicagoland and Southern California

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 306B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session invites participants to engage in futuring education and education research through “intentional collective planning and future making that seeks to spark innovation, sustainability, and equitable opportunities” (Winn, 2025 as cited in Winn, 2025, p. 1). By creating dialogue across four papers sharing resonant environmental justice education projects in Chicago and Los Angeles, we will explore how local histories, ecological challenges, and science education initiatives can inform collective action toward more just and sustainable futures. These papers are held together by their emphasis on research practice partnerships and participatory design research while each represents a different point of departure and visions of justice.
