Session Type: Symposium
This symposium explores the challenges and possibilities of critical pedagogy and youth-led advocacy in a climate where public education is increasingly shaped by political repression. While participatory civic education has been on the decline in K–12 education, today it is being actively criminalized through state legislation. As state actors reframe civic engagement as indoctrination, they assert control over what counts as democratic education, narrowing civic learning and reshaping schools in ways that discourage engaged pedagogy. Yet the demand for student and teacher voice has never been more urgent. Drawing from work, youth-led organizing, educator preparation programs, and policy advocates, this session foregrounds practices that cultivate critical consciousness and political agency, affirming the necessity of student and teacher advocacy.
