Session Type: Symposium
Mature students, post-secondary students 21 years old or older, are an understudied group in higher education (HE) research and policy related to equity, access, and lifelong learning, despite representing a third of the HE population in Canada, the USA. (author, 2022). The proposed symposium builds understanding of factors that can facilitate or hinder mature students’ access to HE, as they are often at the intersection of multiple forms of discrimination related to age, race, ethnicity, citizenship status and/or socioeconomic status. The focus will be on the experiences of particular populations of mature students in higher education to determine holistic, best practices and the impacts of such strategies on adult learners (Park & Bahia, 2022).
