Sat, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 2nd Floor, Platinum I

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium, I ulu no ka lālā i ke kumu (“The branches grow because of the trunk”), explores how community schools can thrive by grounding in Hawaiʻi Indigenous values and ancestral knowledge. Guided by ʻōlelo noʻeau (wise sayings) and presented through three moʻolelo, the session examines the interconnections of family, school, and community partnerships: Indigenous frameworks for community schools, culture based trauma informed SEL, and the role of teacher climate in readiness and implementation. Together, the papers illustrate how pilina, aloha, and ʻike kūpuna can transform schools from systems of survival to spaces of abundance and equity. The discussant will consider how these lessons invite community schools everywhere to begin with knowing their place, their history, and their ʻāina.
