Reimagining Researcher-Participant Relations in Engineering and Computing Education

Sat, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515A

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

It is critical that Engineering and Computing Education research examines the power relations among researchers, participants, and communities by considering important questions around what constitutes data, whose purposes are prioritized, and who benefits from research. In this structured poster session, we are guided by the notion that “data is a gift” from participants as we present narratives of critical, justice-oriented research that reimagines researcher-participant relations. Each poster shares examples of designing learning environments, rethinking analysis, and carefully considering specific issues of place and space in ethical decisions about research committed to humanizing Engineering & Computing Education. We resist a solutionist approach in favor of presenting examples that inspire new questions to guide researchers towards more ethical relations with people and communities.
