Learning Where we Live: Reimagining STEM Through Community Practices

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 4

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

While STEM education has not always recognized the cultural and linguistic assets that marginalized families bring to STEM learning (Yosso, 2005), there is a growing body of research highlighting the value of asset-based approaches that honor and build on these strengths. This symposium presents four studies that examine how asset-based knowledge can support STEM education and practice. Drawing from community-based approaches, we explore how identity, culture, and everyday family practices can inform STEM learning, highlighting the potential of culturally grounded, home-centered experiences to enrich classroom instruction. Through this work, we offer evidence of how everyday STEM practices are embedded in cultural contexts and can be leveraged to guide educators into a more inclusive way of portraying STEM education.
