Violence Against Educators in Context: New National Evidence from School Personnel Across Roles and Identities

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Level 2, Echo Park

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session features four presentations examining how different Pre-K-12 U.S. school personnel (i.e. social workers, paraprofessionals, school psychologists, teachers, and administrators) experience violence at school. Data are sourced from a nationally representative survey of over 11,000 school staff, collected during 2023. The survey was conducted by the American Psychological Association Task Force on Violence Against Educators and School Personnel. This serves as a follow-up to the symposium at AERA 2025, titled “The Perils of Educating: A National Sample of School Personnel Perceptions of School Violence”, which used a different sample of school personnel collected the previous year. All papers discuss implications of and recommendations for better contextualized multi-tierd approaches to address safety and wellbeing in schools.
