Session Type: Structured Poster Session
This poster symposium explores how data science can empower learners to become informed, critically engaged citizens. It highlights how a range of educational contexts—from middle school social studies and humanities to undergraduate computer science—can leverage authentic data to fuel inquiry that students experience as relevant, meaningful, and valuable. The presentations showcase how students, guided by their own cultural lenses and social concerns, have leveraged data visualization, GIS mapping, and service-learning projects to investigate complex issues like food access, social justice, and community needs. The work collectively demonstrates that by humanizing data and connecting it to authentic civic action, educators can cultivate students' data literacy, critical thinking, and agency, preparing them for a data-centric world.
