Rooted in History, Emboldening the Future: Scoping the SEL Implementation Literature and Enacting Statewide Change

Sun, April 12, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Level 3, Santa Monica B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Although well understood that “implementation matters” in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), only a small literature focuses on “implementation mechanisms.” In this session, we will review findings from a systematic literature search to identify conditions required for systemic SEL implementation; amplify motivations, tensions, contradictions, and ideas for integrating SEL and equity; and introduce a novel conceptual framework for shifting SEL practice. Finally, we will explore empirical results from one state’s efforts to use these findings and emergent conceptual model to shift the conditions for SEL implementation statewide. We must learn from the existing SEL literature, grapple with its tensions and contradictions, and innovate with educational leaders to transform the conditions for an emboldened SEL practice for the future.
