Session Type: Symposium
What if social-emotional learning (SEL) for young people is driven by their own visions? In this symposium, we as multigenerational scholars come together to intentionally reflect on this question and how it has driven our work. We do so by showcasing how we each have involved youth in dreaming, co-designing, and evaluating place-based and culturally responsive SEL across the US. Based upon diverse research methods, these three studies share the similarities in cultivating spaces and foregrounding culture and the local context for youth to voice their concerns for SEL. The symposium illustrates how youth participatory, design-based, and community-engaged research can be used for researchers to build trusting relationships with youth to dream new educational possibilities.
