Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This session examines the potential of Ethnic Studies in professional developments and training for educational leaders charged with implementing Ethnic Studies at their schools/universities. This session is urgent as educational leaders are mandated to implement Ethnic Studies by local and state policies. The session will 1) discuss Critical Leadership Praxis, and its alignment with Ethnic Studies Pedagogy, to build effective transformative leadership; 2) present a Leadership Participatory Action Research study on a leadership development series for leaders responsible to implement AB 101; 3) introduce the concept “counterhegemonic educational leadership” to examine operational, curricular/pedagogical, and sociopolitical challenges while implementing Ethnic Studies; and 4) provide a critical reflection study on the implementation of Ethnic Studies in two Educational Leadership programs.
