Session Type: Symposium
In alignment with AERA and the unique theme of the RFBE SIG, this symposium explores the complex realities of Black maleness, masculinity, and manhood within educational contexts. Through four interrelated papers, presenters will engage in critical discourse through various methods of research that examine constructions of Black maleness, manhood, and masculinity, and interrogate an array of perceptions of Black men/males and their relationship to masculinity. Collectively, the session challenges hegemonic narratives, foregrounds the humanity and intellectual labor of Black male scholars, and imagines liberatory futures for Black men/males in education. In the spirit of advancing constructive and intergenerational dialogue, this symposium centers justice, historical memory, and epistemic resistance as guiding principles for transforming educational research and practice.
