Beyond Mentoring: Muxerista, Feminista, and Black Feminist Approaches to Femtorship

Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 304C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session challenges traditional, individualistic models of mentorship to center the voices of BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ scholars, especially self-identifying women of color. While some mentorship relationships aim to address social inequality, we ask: can they truly sustain ethical, transformative relationships rooted in care and community? We aim to cultivate care in spaces aimed at murdering the spirit (Author, 2021) by moving beyond mentorship by disrupting harmful white, cis, heteronormative, ableist, patriarchal, and elitist structures in academia. This session conceptualized Muxerista, Feminista, and Black Feminist Approaches to Femtorship rooted in liberatory praxis that nurture healing, resist spirit murder, and build intergenerational resistance.
