Belonging and Becoming: Racial Affinity Group Caucus Pedagogy in Medical Education

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 501C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

There is an increasing demand in medical education to cultivate professional identities, rooted in racial equity and belonging. This symposium explores the use of Racial Affinity Group Caucusing (RAGC) as a pedagogical strategy across medical education. Presentations include: 1) a theoretical grounding on the role of RAGC to support antiracist education, professional identity formation, and learner belonging; 2) a case study of implementation of groups, and 3) present findings from qualitative research exploring the experience of RAGCs for minoritized pediatric residents. A concluding panel will engage in discourse across papers and pose questions about the future of antiracist pedagogy in medicine. The session explores historically grounded and emerging practices that support equity, identity integration, and professional identity formation.
