Relational Pedagogy and Belonging: Navigating the Social Dimensions of Student Motivation and Learning

Sun, April 12, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 4

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This session examines how student-teacher relationships, school climate, and collaborative classroom practices foster belonging, engagement, and achievement across educational settings. Using mixed methods and quantitative analyses of large datasets, the papers emphasize social and contextual factors that include students’ nuanced perceptions of teacher relational actions, the mediating role of social-emotional learning between school climate and achievement, and how classroom goal structures and teacher-student relationship quality shape emotional engagement. Collectively, these papers advance our understanding of the interpersonal and context-bound foundations of motivation, offering actionable insights for the design of classrooms and schools that prioritize belonging, self-efficacy, and meaningful learning experiences.
