Session Type: Paper Session
This session highlights research that centers young adolescents’ identities, sense of belonging, and experiences of inclusion in today’s middle schools. Presenters explore how educators foster trust, empathy, and authentic connections in the face of social and political challenges. Studies examine LGBTQ+ youth navigating erasure, predictors of school belonging, students’ perspectives on “STAR” teachers, the role of legacy and purpose in adolescence, and the pedagogical wisdom of award-winning history teachers. Collectively, these papers illuminate how equitable, responsive, and humanizing practices can cultivate thriving learning environments that honor the voices and complexities of all middle grades students.
