Division J Fireside Chat: Unwriting the Hidden Curriculum: Unforgetting Histories, Reimagining Doctoral Futures

Sat, April 11, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 402A

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

What would doctoral education look like if its hidden curriculum were made visible and rewritten for equity, care, and belonging? This interactive fireside chat, led by facilitators, invites graduate students, faculty, and administrators to critically examine the unspoken norms that shape doctoral life in postsecondary contexts. Through small group dialogues, participants will unforget the histories and power dynamics embedded in doctoral training while collectively imagining more transparent and inclusive futures. Drawing from lived experiences across institutional types, we will co-create insights and strategies that re-envision mentorship, professional identity, and wellness in the academy. The session concludes by curating a collective resource that captures participants’ visions for transforming the doctoral experience within and beyond higher education.
