A Tribe Called “Quest”. Remembering Histories and Shaping Futures in Experiential and Global Learning

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 402A

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

This panel engages the AERA theme’s call to “reimagine the purpose, practice, and possibilities of education” by interrogating post-secondary study abroad through the lenses of unforgetting histories and envisioning equitable futures. Panelists examine how intentional, collective preparation and reflection can transform study abroad into a site of critical inquiry amid global sociopolitical tensions. Central questions include: How might educators cultivate students’ reflexivity about belief systems and cultural epistemologies in transnational contexts? What restorative pedagogies foster safe, affirming spaces for transformative learning? Drawing on the theme’s emphasis on historical consciousness and future-making, the panel reconceptualizes study abroad as a justice-oriented praxis connecting global engagement with community wisdom, activism, and commitments to educational transformation.
