RFBE Reception: Hussle and Flow

Fri, April 10, 8:45 to 10:15pm PDT (8:45 to 10:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 408B

Session Type: Reception

Abstract

Black academics continue to hustle and flow, not simply as a matter of endurance, but as a cultivated intellectual and creative practice shaped by navigating institutions that have not always been built to sustain us. Drawing on the hip hop ethos implied in the title of the blockbuster film Hustle & Flow and the resilient spirit of the late great Crenshaw emcee Nipsey Hussle, this framing recognizes the layered labor Black scholars carry---simultaneously producing rigorous scholarship, building community, mentoring across generations, and innovating within constraint. This ethic has long enabled Black academics to transform marginality into method and resourcefulness into practice. In this way, hussle and flow names both a condition and a strategy. This receptions is cofacilitated with the Critical Educators for Social Justice SIG.
