Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
The long-standing conversation about the relationship between education and democracy has intensified since the last U.S. presidential election. This session will explore two of core strands: how public education advances democracy, and how democracy contributes to public education. Grounded in democratic principles, a multi-generational, multi-disciplinary panel of educational historians, researchers, policy scholars, practitioners, and advocates will engage in a moderated dialogue guided by audience participation. By bridging research silos and drawing on real-world expertise, we aim to illuminate gaps in our understanding of how education can bolster democracy and how democratic practices can transform education. Our goal is to future democracy in and through education by catalyzing collaborative research and action to address consequential challenges.
