Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 403A

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by academics from underrepresented backgrounds, these mentoring roundtables provide targeted support and guidance across various locations of the academic career experience for scholars of color in education.

Each mentoring table focuses on a specific topic crucial to the advancement and well-being of scholars of color in academia. The first table addresses the transition from doctoral student to assistant professor, offering insights, strategies, and resources for navigating this pivotal career stage. The second table explores the cultural taxation of scholars of color—the often unrecognized burden placed on them in educational institutions—offering guidance and strategies for managing these demands. The third table examines diverse career paths beyond the doctorate, where participants discuss strategies and opportunities for transitioning from an educational doctorate into non-academic careers. Finally, the fourth table addresses the critical issue of mental health and well-being in academia, providing a supportive space for scholars to discuss race-related mental health outcomes and support strategies.
