Teaching During COVID in Ecuador and Uruguay: A Comparative Phenomenological Study

Abstract

The pandemic was an event that impacted K-12 schools, leading to alternative ways to teach and learn while protecting the health of teachers, students, parents, and school administrators. This qualitative study explored 12 K-12 teachers from Ecuador and Uruguay who shared their perspectives about the challenges of moving from face-to-face to online teaching. The results produced themes regarding the teachers’ prior experience and teacher’s technological competence, school leadership, pedagogical differences, logistical issues regarding technology, parents’ academic engagement, sustainability of online learning, and positive perspectives on online instruction. Although the teachers and students have adapted to the new online teaching, these issues should be considered to improve the teaching profession.
