Data Ethics and Data Privacy: The Beta Test of Materials to Build Educators' Capacity

Fri, April 22, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 2nd Level, Harbor Tower, Harbor Ballroom D

Abstract

This paper reports on an effort to develop scenarios based on authentic activities educators may face that confront them with ethical issues around data privacy and data ethics. Scenarios were developed that can be used in educator preparation, professional development, and for personal edification. Topics included social media, technology, classroom practices, student indices, communication, virtual settings, and structural issues. A formative beta-test was conducted in one educator preparation program to understand how the materials may be integrated into programs and how students and instructors responded to their use. Implications for integrating scenarios into pre-service and in-service venues are discussed to build capacity for educators to use data responsibly and provide equitable experiences to all students in all learning environments.
