Tracing the Lineage of International Inclusive Education Practices in Kenya

Abstract

In this paper, we trace the academic lineage of inclusive education in Kenya. Some large international development organisations look to the region as a guide for disability inclusive education projects. Given the focus on developing sustainable inclusive education systems in low-resourced countries in the global South (World Bank, 2019), we situate this work in inclusive education research from both the global North and South. We highlight Kenya as a leader in inclusive education in low-resourced contexts, citing policies, laws, and research that make this disability inclusive development work innovative and progressive. Specifically, we outline inclusive education teacher training modules that we used in an applied research project in rural western Kenyan schools and provide actionable steps to support future implementation.
