Black and Latino Men Speak Back to the Neoliberal Community College

Abstract

This mixed methods, longitudinal study aimed to understand Black and Latino men’s faltering academic achievement at Urban Community College (UCC), a mid-sized public community college in the Northeast, in the context of neoliberal reforms intended to shorten time-to-degree and increase the graduation rate. While these policies were justified by discourses of concern for racial equity, this study revealed how neoliberal educational policies aligned with the college completion movement, such as the push for continuous full-time enrollment and guided curricular pathways, were implicated in the academic challenges faced by a cohort of Black and Latino men.
