Music Self-Efficacy of Amateur Musicians Who Used Online Music Tutorials During COVID-19

Abstract

The study focused on the music self-efficacy (MSE) of amateur musicians who used online music tutorials while trying to learn how to play new pieces, explored the relationship between learning and playing habits, grit, and self-esteem and their effect on MSE. Participants were 409 amateur music players in 30 countries. The results indicated that preferences of autonomy online music tutorials (which foster knowledge), playing with others, and weekly hours of playing, were positive predictors of MSE as well as grit and self-esteem. Ordinary least squares regression indicated a significant model; the independent variables accounted for 50% of the variance in MSE. The data were collected in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, and should be further explored post Covid-19.
