Estimation and Algebraic Reasoning Through Anishinaabe Medallions

Abstract

In this study, three research teams made of up Anishinaabe community artists and educators and non-Indigenous educators co-designed and delivered a series of cultural mathematical inquiries in Grade 6 and Grade 10 classrooms to collaboratively explore mathematics in the context of Anishinaabe beadwork. Results indicate that these investigations supported students’ understanding of estimation, and linear and quadratic growth. More importantly, students gained an appreciation of Anishinaabe culture and the importance of experiencing multiple cultural perspectives when learning mathematics.
