Democratic values are being challenged, even in countries with a long democratic tradition. Particularly three challenges to democracy can be noted: the hegemony of neoliberalism, the right-wing movement and the pandemic. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the task of the school in a democratic society and the accomplishment of this task. To get knowledge about the world, in terms of “transactional realism”, is helpful for understanding how societies can maintain and educate new generations for a democratic stance and a democratic way of living because pragmatic inquiry shares a “discourse ethics” with democracy. “Civic literacy” includes to develop knowledge about the world, to learn to act responsible in the world, and to realize oneself in the world.
